A single eGFR result does not always provide a complete picture. Temporary illnesses, dehydration, certain medications, and changes in creatinine levels can influence the result. For this reason, doctors often look at trends in eGFR rather than relying on one number.

Regular testing can be especially useful for people with conditions that increase the risk of kidney damage, including diabetes and high blood pressure.

Regular testing can help identify changes before significant symptoms develop. This is important because chronic kidney disease can progress silently in its early stages.

Can eGFR Be Improved?

Whether eGFR can improve depends on the reason it has decreased. If the reduction is related to a temporary problem such as dehydration or acute kidney injury, kidney function may improve after the underlying condition is treated.

For chronic kidney disease, the main goal is often to slow further loss of kidney function. Managing blood pressure and blood sugar, following prescribed treatment, maintaining a healthy lifestyle, and avoiding unnecessary medicines that may harm the kidneys can all be important.

Patients should discuss their individual results with their healthcare professional rather than trying to interpret an eGFR value in isolation.

When Should You Talk to a Doctor?

A healthcare professional should evaluate persistently abnormal eGFR results, especially when they occur alongside protein in the urine, high blood pressure, diabetes, swelling, changes in urination, or other signs of possible kidney problems.

A doctor may recommend repeat blood tests, urine tests, imaging, or additional investigations depending on the situation.
